A Beginner’s Guide to THC Cannabinoids in Hemp
When shopping for Hemp Products, it’s common to encounter a focus on THC cannabinoids. While many customers are familiar with THC, discovering cannabinoid isolate products like THCA, THCV, or THCB can feel like stepping into a whole new realm. This highlights the importance of education about the hemp plant.
At Panther Canna, we aim to ensure that all our shoppers feel confident and informed when selecting hemp-derived products. If you’re new to hemp-derived THC products, you’ve found the perfect place to begin your journey!
What is THC?
THC is short for tetrahydrocannabinol. According to information shared by Live Science, “THC is one of many compounds found in the resin secreted by glands of the marijuana plant. More of these glands are found around the reproductive organs of the plant than on any other area of the plant.”
At the time of this writing, there are more than 100 known cannabinoids found within the hemp plant. While THC is the most common cannabinoid found in marijuana, it is not as abundant in hemp. This is due to hundreds of years of selective breeding for specific traits, such as CBD production, minor cannabinoid production, or fiber use.
Out of those more than 100 known cannabinoids found within the hemp plant, only a handful of them produce psychoactive properties. These are the THC cannabinoids. Some THC cannabinoids, like Delta 9, are more plentiful than others, for example, THCV.
Other THC properties may include anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory effects. According to Harvard Health Publishing, “A highly promising area of research is its use for PTSD in veterans returning from combat zones. Many veterans and their therapists report drastic improvements and are calling for more studies, as well as a loosening of governmental restrictions on its research.”
It’s important to note that many studies examining the medical use of THC cannabinoids are still considered preliminary. However, the legalization of hemp has increased the availability of biomass for research purposes.
THC Starts as THCA
Before THC cannabinoids like Delta 8 or Delta 9 can manifest, they first exist as THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid). According to WebMD, “If you smoke or vaporize THCA, it instantly transforms into THC, which can produce a high.”
This transformation occurs through a process known as decarboxylation. For decarboxylation to take place, THCA must be heated to a temperature between 220°F and 240°F. This is why smokable hemp flower and concentrates need to be heated for individuals to experience their effects.
Different THC Cannabinoids
There are several different THC cannabinoids. While Delta 9 and Delta 8 are widely recognized, lesser-known THC minor cannabinoids include:
- THCP
- THCB
- THCV
- THCJD
- Delta 10
- THCH
